Welcome includes 2 minute talk from AMSA-NZMSS 2024 Gold Sponsor CSIRO delivered by Andrew Martini, Research Director - Engineering & Technology Program National Collections and Marine Infrastructure
Team Aotearoa New Zealand: Alice Rogers, Jerusha Bennett, and Shane Lavery
Team Australia: Emily Ogier, Jennifer Smith, and Madeline Green
Welcome to AMSA-NZMSS 2024, co-hosted by the leading marine science associations of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand!
To celebrate the midpoint of a week full of exciting ANZ science, sparkling Trans-Tasman ideas, and brilliant Aussie-Kiwi minds, your scientific committee invites you to put old grievances aside.
After all, does it really matter who invented the pavlova? Are underarm cricket bowls really such a big deal? Aren’t kakapos and cassowaries just equally weird? And who is to judge a consenting sheep for their mate choices?
Instead, join us for the only conference event where we reject the theme (“navigating uncertainty”) and instead deal exclusively with certainty, hard facts, and clinical objectivity. We are here to settle what really matters:
Australia versus New Zealand!
Who is better – under the waterline?
Both nations’ top marine scientists will go head-to-head in a classic debate format to claim the crown. How will they prove superiority? Which coasts are better, long swooping beaches, or dramatic fiords? Who has the cutest, tastiest, or most iconic species? Who has the best, biggest, most effective marine parks? And who takes best care of the wonderful marine natures and cultures they are lucky to call home? (Neither probably).
Three speakers per team. Four minutes each. The audience selects the winner.
High stakes. National pride. Rigorous data. And a healthy dose of comedy.
Join us for a light-hearted showcase of trans-Tasman’s finest marine wonders and an invitation to say g’day and kia ora over the rest of the week – and across the ditch.
