Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) Lunch: Kick-off of the Australian and New Zealand Node

Collect your lunch from the main AMSA conference buffet and meet at Hotel Grand Chancellor, Grand Ballroom 1, 12:30-13:30 pm Tuesday, 17th of September 2024.

Join us for a special lunchtime event to officially launch the Australian and New Zealand Node of the Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) program - a global network of marine researchers and professionals endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade.

All ECRs and students attending AMSA are invited to attend - to come together and connect with peers from diverse fields who share a passion for the ocean, and learn more about the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), and about how to get involved. You'll have the chance to:

  • Gain insights into the Ocean Decade and how you can get involved.
  • Learn about the goals and activities of the Australian and New Zealand Node.
  • Network with fellow ECOPs and build lasting connections.
  • Share ideas, experiences, and aspirations for the future of ocean science in Australia and New Zealand.

This event aims to not only inform, but also to inspire and empower ECRs and students to connect with a dynamic, supportive network that will support your own research and aims and strengthen our collective impact on ocean science. Whether you're just starting out or have a few years under your belt, we hope you can join us and expand your network, deepen your understanding of the Ocean Decade, and be inspired by the vibrant Australian and New Zealand ECOP community.

We look forward to seeing you there and kicking off this exciting new node together!

Venue: Hobart Brewing Company

This informal off-site event will explore evidence-based approaches on how we can acknowledge the myriad of feelings associated with climate and eco distress, and support ourselves and others, in ways that facilitate action and minimise overwhelm. Recent research from our keynote Joe Duggan, and others, has demonstrated the benefit of sharing strategies for coping with the emotional toll of the climate crisis, and this is something that resonates strongly with collective experience. This interactive event will include a short talk from Joe, brief personal perspectives from our panel, and the opportunity to share your own views and ask questions. The evening will be chaired by experienced eco/climate distress counsellor Karen Grant, with the aim of sharing strategies and approaches for acknowledging, minimising and managing distress.

Moderator: Karen Grant, B. Psychological Science, Dip. Counselling
Keynote: Joe Duggan, ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society
Panel:

  • Katie Cresswell, IMAS
  • Jamie Allnutt, FRDC
  • Olly Dove, IMAS and That’s What I Call Science Podcast
  • Gretta Pecl, IMAS and Centre for Marine Socioecology
  • Joe Duggan, ANU
