The ocean is critical to human health and survival. Ironically as a nation  surrounded by the ocean, Australia lacks a unified public education approach on this vital subject. The absence of ocean literacy in the curriculum, scattered resources and time constraints faced by educators, hampers efforts to provide comprehensive learning opportunities. As a result, Australia lags behind in global efforts towards Ocean Literacy.

The Ocean Literacy Portal (OLP) seeks to bridge this gap by creating a freely accessible online repository. It serves as a platform for public education, engagement in ocean conservation and accessible curriculum-aligned resources. It’s a critical tool that will foster a sense of community, empowerment, and engagement, uniting diverse stakeholders in the mission to enhance ocean literacy.

This presentation will delve into the insights gained from developing the Victorian model, and how it can be scaled nationally and internationally positioning Australia as a leader in ocean literacy and advancing ocean literacy on a global scale.
