The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceangraphic Commission (IOC) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) has  a mission to build and maintain a global alliance that collaborates with scientific communities to facilitate free and open access to, and application of, biodiversity and biogeographic data and information on marine life. OBIS has 33 regional and thematic nodes around the globe which focus on mobilisation of biodiversity data to a global data aggregator: https://obis.org/. Data can be published by researchers at a regional or thematic Node, or can be published by an OBIS Node in collaboration with the data collectors. Data is published in an interoperable, global standard data format called Darwin Core, a collection of files containing species observations, taxonomy and supplementary contextual data. OBIS datasets maintain attribution of the original providers and the OBIS platform, network and software tools provide a suite of marine biodiversity data and data management capability to our global research and policy communities. This talk will present the key role OBIS plays in international marine biodiversity networks and platforms and how the global community can work together to enhance our ocean policies and scientific understanding.
