Rikki J Taylor
Rikki holds a Master's degree in Marine Science from the University of Auckland, completed in 2018. Her thesis focused on developing fish-based indicators for ecosystem-based management of the Chatham Rise trawl fishery, utilizing 24 years of trawl survey data spanning over 200 species. Following her studies, Rikki spent five years as a Fisheries Technician at the National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA), where she led and coordinated commercial catch sampling, participated in numerous scientific fisheries surveys across New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (including the subantarctic region), and took part in marine biosecurity surveys around ports. Beyond her fieldwork, she also managed a national network of recreational fishing interviewers in the North Island, oversaw the onsite laboratory, processed and analyzed otoliths for inshore species, and handled the delivery of biological and fishery data for various sampling projects.
Now working in the SESSF region, Rikki is applying her scientific background and technical expertise from New Zealand to advance fisheries research in Australia. Her current focus includes developing skills in field sampling design and execution, reproductive biology, ageing methodology, and the development and application of stock assessment methods.
