Hemi Cumming

Dr Hemi Cumming is a Māori researcher (affiliated to Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Raukawa ki te tonga) based at Plant and Food Research’s Seafood Technologies Portfolio in Aotearoa New Zealand. He is a co-lead of their Open Ocean Aquaculture research programme which aims to maximise utilisation of exposed waters through the development of technologies and fish species. Hemi plays a key role in building vital relationships needed to help realise the ambitious aims of this research programme. Having a background as a science researcher and deeply connected to his Māori culture, he is passionate about weaving Māori knowledge, rights, values and people into seafood technology research, in the hope of creating new seafood industries that provide benefits to Māori, to New Zealand and beyond.
