Aquaculture in exposed waters and the development of new fish species for aquaculture are some of the new frontiers for sustainable aquaculture growth. Māori (the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa/NZ) have a deep connection with and knowledge of their marine environment and resources. Despite this, Māori can often be left out or ignored in aquaculture research. This presentation aims to unpack the opportunities and challenges of working with Māori experts and Māori organisations in seafood/aquaculture research, as well as how science institutes need to better understand their indigenous communities and priorities. Specific examples will be discussed of how our research organisation is adapting to better align with the evolving Māori political landscape and our strategies to enhance and partner with Māori in the development of new native fish species for aquaculture.
