Catriona Macleod
Professor Catriona Macleod has over 30 years of experience in aquaculture development, environmental interactions, and natural resource management, especially in science-based management and decision-making and multiple use management in marine and coastal ecosystems. Her current research focuses on sustainable aquaculture development, and how aquaculture can help achieve global sustainable development goals, combat climate change, promote the circular economy, and restore ecosystems. She has been a key investigator on over 30 industry and government collaboration projects, participated in numerous advisory groups, and held several executive roles, including Executive Director at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. Catriona has led research projects in three Australian Cooperative Research Centres (Aquaculture, Aquafin, and Seafood), and currently leads the sustainable production program within the Australian Marine Bioproducts CRC. She is on the board of New Zealand King Salmon and is a founding board member of the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance. Her experience places her in a fairly unique position to comment on just how aquaculture can contribute to solving some of the key global sustainability issues. In this presentation she hopes to provide an insight into both the opportunities and challenges that aquaculture presents in relation to the circular economy, and explain the responsibility we have to make sure we fully understand and take advantage of that opportunity.
