Jakob Weis
I am a biological oceanographer specialising in the fields of ocean biogeochemistry, nutrient cycling and phytoplankton dynamics. I use in situ bio-optical observations from animal-borne sensors and BGC-Argo floats, as well as satellite remote sensing products, to study phytoplankton physiology and phenology in coastal polynyas in the Antarctic sea-ice zone. Specifically, I focus on the phytoplankton responses to natural iron fertilization and its implications for oceanic carbon sequestration and polar ecosystems. Previously, I studied Southern Ocean fertilisation from windblown iron sources, including mineral dust and bushfire emissions.
