Ruth G Patterson

Dr. Ruth Patterson is an Australian oceanographer specialising in the adoption of Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) for scientific observing. Dr. Patterson has extensive hands-on experience in USV operations, securing regulatory permissions for operating USVs in Australian waters and having developed and delivered training modules for USV operations. Her PhD research, accepted in 2023, delves into USV technological diffusion and emphasizes their dual-use potential in remote areas such as northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific. Dr. Patterson currently leads the Advanced Oceanographic Services Practice at Elysium EPL, which is a veteran-owned consultancy with specialist skills in developing advanced maritime capability for clients including the Royal Australian Navy. Internationally recognized, Dr. Patterson has earned multiple United States University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Early Career Ocean Professional honorariums for her leadership in developing the USVs for GOOS network under the UN Ocean Decade's Observing Air-Sea Interaction Strategy (OASIS) in her role at Elysium EPL. With a 17-year tenure in Darwin and roots in northeast Arnhem Land and PNG, her career spans industry, academia, government and Defence, underscoring her broad understanding of the fundamentals that drive success in each sector.
