For several decades, Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners have been calling for a collective approach to achieving our rights and aspirations for ownership, access to, and involvement in the governance and management of Sea Country. The Reef Trust Partnership (RTP) presented a unique opportunity to design a program aimed at delivering on these aspirations, creating stronger Indigenous-led processes and driving transformative systems change towards inclusive governance and management of the Reef. In 2020, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation convened four Traditional Owner governance working groups to co-design the landmark investment across the RTP component areas: Water Quality, Integrated Monitoring and Reporting, Reef Restoration and Adaptation Science and Crown-of-Thorns Starfish control. Drawing from our technical and professional expertise and lived experience as Traditional Owners, we are focused on removing barriers to Traditional Owner participation and leadership in reef protection and restoration activities. This presentation will highlight how Traditional Owner governance of the program has delivered outcomes for Traditional Owners and the health of the reef; from the grassroots – funding on-Country Traditional Owner-led projects – to the top levels, as we influence key policies, programs and processes for the benefit of Traditional Owners working towards healthy Country.
