As the world’s population becomes increasingly reliant on technology, approaches to science communication and education should be reassessed. Digital platforms provide significant opportunities for increased community engagement and outreach, however, also challenge the scientific community which generally preference traditional outputs. We developed the www.tasfisheriesresearch.org website in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Tasmania to provide a digital platform for Tasmanian fisheries stock assessment information and data. The digital transformation of Tasmanian stock assessment reports allows for faster delivery of information, as well as increased transparency, accessibility, and engagement. Additionally, the Tasmanian Wild Fisheries Assessments website provides an enriched user experience with interactive graphics and the ability to download data. Website user statistics, such as pages visited, geographic location and interaction times, have been collected through anonymous tracking. The user statistics provide valuable audience information for prioritising the digitisation of information based on the needs of stakeholders and planning long-term website development. Furthermore, the lessons learned from the development of the website and successful stakeholder uptake can be useful to other researchers and scientific organisations interested in embracing digital platforms for scientific communication and engaging stakeholders with data science.
